Titz'n Glitz was started in 1995 as a party in the
home of Margo Kerr of Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. The
purpose was to show love and support for four neighbourhood
women diagnosed with breast cancer.
Seventy-five women attended and, between them, managed
to raise $1,500.
The event has grown each year and was held this year on
October 4th at the Lord Nelson Hotel in Halifax. One thousand
women attended with a goal to raise $100,000.
This year partygoers enjoyed cocktails, eats and girl
chat, a raffle draw, an auction, decorations that included
an ice sculpture of breasts, a parade of unique and crazy
bras, moving personal stories and even a press-a-breast
canvas. The press-a-breast consists of women slathering
paint all over their breasts and press them against a
canvas. The resulting art is then auctioned off at the
end of the evening. Last year the canvas was donated to,
and now hangs in the offices of, the Nova Scotia Breast
Screening Clinic.
But canvas is not the only creative means of expression
- costumes have taken a lead role in the event, uniting
women through imagination and fun. Comic, clever and symbolic,
costumes have names like The Minus One Club, The Mamogrannies,
Under Construction or Tit-tanic.
What do you call a costume that has Jacques Parizeau on
the left breast and Lucien Buchard on the right? Separ-a-tits!
This sort of levity increases the comfort level of everyone
on such a sensitive occasion. And each year the most Udderly
Wonderful costumes win awards!
Titz 'n Glitz...yes the name has been discussed back strap
to bra hook. Whether people like or dislike the name,
it does start women talking about their breasts and their
health.
